Risen - The Turning Point

Why Palm Sunday Matters

This past Sunday at Highpoint AG in Royse City, we celebrated Palm Sunday with a powerful reminder that Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was the beginning of the ultimate "Turning Point." Preaching from 1 Peter 2:24, Pastor David Barnes showed us that the Cross was a moment of divine substitution: Jesus bore our sins so we could bear His righteousness.

Are you looking for a turning point in your life? Whether you need physical healing, spiritual peace, or freedom from the weight of the past, remember that "by His wounds you have been healed."

Join us next week for our Easter Celebration at 7:00 AM or 10:00 AM as we celebrate the empty tomb! Visit highpointag.org/easter for more info.

Risen – The Turning Point

This third installment of our "Risen" series focused on 1 Peter 2:24, describing the Cross not just as a historical event, but as the definitive "Turning Point" for humanity.

1. Substitution: Jesus Took Our Sin

Pastor David emphasized the deeply personal nature of the sacrifice.

  • The Personal Burden: The phrase "He himself bore our sins in his body" underscores that Jesus didn't just overlook sin; He took the physical and spiritual punishment we deserved.

  • The Symbolism of "The Tree": Using Peter’s language, the Pastor connected the Cross to the Old Testament "curse" mentioned in Deuteronomy 21:23. By dying on "the tree," Jesus took the curse of the law upon Himself to set us free.

2. Transformation: Die to Live

The "Turning Point" is not just about a change in legal status, but a change in nature.

  • Breaking the Power: Pastor David argued that the Cross wasn't just for forgiveness, but for breaking the power of sin.

  • New Alignment: The goal of the sacrifice is "that we might die to sin and live to righteousness". He challenged the Royse City community to move beyond "sin management" and into a life fully aligned with God's will.

3. Healing Power: Spiritual and Physical

The message concluded with the powerful declaration: "By His wounds you have been healed."

  • The Impact of Suffering: Pastor David explained that Jesus’s physical suffering (His wounds) provided the basis for our total healing.

  • Holistic Restoration: This healing is both spiritual (forgiveness and peace) and physical. The service included a time of ministry where the Holy Spirit was invited to "reach across any distance" to touch people at their point of need.

Small Group Discussion

Read 1 Peter 2:24 and Deuteronomy 21:23

Discussion Questions

  1. Palm branches symbolized victory for a king. In what areas of life should we welcome Jesus as "King" today?

  2. How does it change your perspective to know that Jesus "bore your sins in his own body"?

  3. Why is it significant that Jesus took the "curse" of the tree (Deuteronomy 21:23) upon Himself?

  4. Pastor David said the Cross is about more than forgiveness; it's about transformation. What is the difference between being "forgiven for sin" and "dying to sin"?

  5. What does it practically look like in your "house" to "live to righteousness"?

  6. Can you identify a specific "Turning Point" moment in your spiritual journey?

  7. 1 Peter 2:24 links Jesus' suffering directly to our healing. How does His physical suffering give you confidence to pray for physical healing today?

  8. Is there a specific "power of sin" or habit you feel the Cross has empowered you to break?

  9. "Hosanna" means "Save us now." If you were shouting that to Jesus today, what would you be asking Him to save you from?

  10. As we head into Easter week, how can we "prepare the way" for Jesus in our community here in Royse City?
