Prepared for "More Than" the Classroom

As the final weeks of summer wind down, the phrase on everyone’s lips is "Back to School." We see it everywhere—stores are filled with new backpacks, fresh school supplies, and racks of fall clothes. Parents are adjusting schedules, teachers are building lesson plans, and students are anticipating new classes, new teachers, and new social dynamics.
While our schools are designed to prepare students academically, God desires to prepare us spiritually.
On Sunday, August 2, 2026, Lead Pastor David Barnes returned to High Point Assembly of God after traveling in July to deliver a timely and empowering message titled "Prepared for More Than the Classroom." Preaching from Proverbs 1:7, Pastor David challenged students, parents, teachers, and believers of all ages to recognize that school—and life itself—is far more than a place to acquire facts. It’s a mission field.
Whether you are stepping onto a school campus, walking into an office, or managing a household, here are three foundational truths from Pastor David's sermon to help you enter this new season grounded in God’s purpose.
1. Begin with the Fear of the Lord (Proverbs 1:7)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” — Proverbs 1:7
Pastor David highlighted that true education doesn’t start with textbooks, search engines, or social media—it starts with God.
"Fearing the Lord" doesn't mean being terrified of God. Instead, it means living with reverence, awe, respect, and complete submission to Him. It means putting God in His rightful place before everything else in our lives:
Before algebra… Know God.
Before science… Honor God.
Before athletics… Seek God.
Before making friends… Walk with God.
We live in a culture flooded with competing voices trying to shape our thinking. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. The best way to start any school day or workday is to start it with God.
2. Walk in the Wisdom of the Holy Spirit (James 1:5)
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5
There is a major difference between knowledge and wisdom:
Knowledge is learning facts; Wisdom is knowing how to apply those facts.
Knowledge answers questions; Wisdom makes decisions.
Knowledge helps you pass a test; Wisdom helps you pass life’s tests.
God did not leave us to navigate life's tests on our own. He gave us a Helper—the Holy Spirit—who is our teacher 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In John 16:13, Jesus promises that the Spirit of truth will guide us into all truth.
When students, teachers, and parents walk onto a campus filled with the Holy Spirit, the atmosphere changes. The Holy Spirit provides discernment, courage, peace, and self-control when we face pressure or confusion.
3. Live as a Witness Wherever You Go (Acts 1:8)
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses…” — Acts 1:8
School is not just a building where students learn—it is a mission field.
Jesus told us that we receive the Holy Spirit’s power so that we can be His witnesses. A witness is simply someone who shares what they have seen, heard, and experienced.
You don't need a microphone to preach a powerful message. Often, the loudest sermon is a life lived with integrity. People are constantly watching how believers respond to temptation, success, failure, pressure, and conflict. When we choose integrity, love, and unwavering faith, we shine the light of Christ in a way that brings glory to our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).
Step Into the Season Prepared
As we move into this new school year, don't just send your students back to school or go through the motions of your daily routine. Go back grounded in the Word of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, and committed to making Jesus known wherever He sends you.
