Pathway to Promise

Oct 25
5 min read

Every powerful movement of God begins with a single, unyielding desire: to be near Him.

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, High Point AG Church gathered for our annual Vision Sunday. Lead Pastor David Barnes delivered a pivotal, forward-looking message titled "His Presence," officially casting the spiritual vision and theme that will guide our church family throughout 2027.

Building upon our foundational commitment to establishing godly households—our individual house, our family house, and our church house—Pastor David challenged us to move beyond superficial Christianity and step into deep, transformative intimacy with God.

“My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” — Exodus 33:14

The Pathway to Promise: Proximity - Presence - Promise

We live in a culture fixated on immediate outcomes, instant success, and claiming God's promises. However, scripture reveals that God never releases His promises outside the context of relationship. There is a divine order to spiritual maturity:

1. Proximity: Drawing Near to God (James 4:8)

Proximity is about closeness. James 4:8 promises: "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." Notice who must make the first move: we do. God has granted us open access through the cross of Jesus Christ, but we must choose to draw near.

In Exodus 33, we observe two distinct levels of proximity:

  • The Camp (Daily Life): The Israelites remained in the camp. It represented normal daily routines, work, family, and casual religious talk. Coming to church on Sunday puts us in proximity to God, but staying in "the camp" means we only observe God from a distance.

  • The Tent of Meeting (Divine Encounter): Moses did not settle for the camp. He regularly pitched a tent outside the camp to meet face-to-face with the Lord.

Proximity Level

Location

Spiritual Reality

Casual Proximity

The Camp

Daily routines, casual faith, observing from a distance.

Intimate Presence

The Tent of Meeting

Divine encounters, deep fellowship, life transformation.

Key Principle: You cannot experience intimacy from a distance. Proximity requires hunger, humility, obedience, and time.

2. Presence: God's Presence Changes Everything (Exodus 33:15)

Moses understood a profound truth: victories, land, and blessings are completely empty without the Lord Himself. When God offered to send an angel to lead Israel into the Promised Land, Moses made a bold declaration:

“If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.” — Exodus 33:15

Moses wanted God Himself, not just what God could give him. When we truly prioritize the presence of God, He provides five essential elements for our daily walk:

WHAT GOD’S PRESENCE PROVIDES

Direction

Peace

Strength

Identity

REST

Without God's presence, worldly success leaves us spiritually empty, ministry becomes exhausting, and blessings turn into heavy burdens. But in His presence, our heavy burdens are replaced by His supernatural rest.

3. Promise: Presence Prepares Us for the Promise

God fulfills His promises through sustained relationship, not shortcuts. Biblical history demonstrates this consistent pattern:

  • Abraham: Walked with God for decades before receiving Isaac.

  • Joseph: Endured the presence of God in prison before ruling in the palace.

  • David: Tended sheep and worshiped in isolation before wearing the crown.

  • The Disciples: Walked closely with Jesus for three years before changing the world.

Key Principle: God prepares people before He delivers promises. His presence shapes our character so we can properly steward His blessings.

How to Move from Proximity to Promise in 2027

To experience the fullness of what God has for High Point Church in 2027, every believer must intentionally transition from standing in the outer courts to dwelling in the Holy of Holies. Pastor David shared three daily action steps:

  1. Prioritize Daily Fellowship with God: Commit to personal prayer, deep scripture reading, and unhurried worship. Avoid relying solely on Sunday morning services for your spiritual nourishment.

  1. Practice God’s Presence Throughout the Day: Bring God into your ordinary routine. Invite Him directly into your workplace, your family decisions, your daily commute, and your personal struggles.

  1. Trust His Timing: Understand that every promise involves a process. Waiting in God’s presence is never wasted time; it is where spiritual strength and wisdom are forged.

As we prepare for 2027, let us resolve to be a people who refuse to move without His presence. Proximity invites Presence, and Presence prepares us for the Promise.

Small Group Discussion Questions

1. Defining Proximity vs. Intimacy

  • Scripture: James 4:8; Psalm 145:18

  • Question: Pastor David pointed out that coming to church puts us in proximity to God, but doesn't automatically make us intimate with Him. What is the difference between attending church services and pursuing personal intimacy with God?

2. The Cost of Proximity

  • Scripture: Jeremiah 29:13; Matthew 7:7–8

  • Question: The sermon noted that drawing near to God requires four things: hunger, humility, obedience, and time. Which of these four areas is currently most challenging for you to offer to the Lord, and why?

3. Moving Out of "The Camp"

  • Scripture: Exodus 33:7–11

  • Question: The Israelites stayed in the camp (daily routines), while Moses pitched the Tent of Meeting outside the camp to seek the Lord. What are some "camp routines" or daily distractions in your life that you need to step away from to encounter God?

4. Seeking the Giver, Not Just the Gifts

  • Scripture: Exodus 33:12–15; Psalm 27:4

  • Question: Moses told God, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here." Why is it so easy for believers to seek God’s promises (blessings, peace, success) rather than seeking God Himself?

5. What the Presence Provides

  • Scripture: Exodus 33:14; Isaiah 40:29–31

  • Question: God’s presence provides direction, peace, strength, identity, and rest. Which of these five provisions do you need most in your current season of life, and how can your small group pray for you in that area?

6. The Remedy for Exhaustion

  • Scripture: Matthew 11:28–30; Psalm 62:1–2

  • Question: Pastor David noted that without God’s presence, ministry and daily life become exhausting. How does dwelling in God’s presence provide true spiritual rest compared to worldly forms of rest or entertainment?

7. Character Before Destiny

  • Scripture: Genesis 39:2–4; 1 Peter 5:6

  • Question: Looking at biblical examples like Joseph or David, why must God shape our character through His presence before He releases His promises or promotions to us?

8. Evaluating Spiritual Health

  • Scripture: 2 Corinthians 13:5; Psalm 139:23–24

  • Question: The sermon warned against becoming "anemic believers" who only pray, read scripture, or worship on Sunday mornings. What daily habits help keep your personal altar active throughout the week?

9. Practicing "Bring Your God to Work"

  • Scripture: Colossians 3:23–24; 1 Corinthians 10:31

  • Question: What does it look like practically to "bring God to work" or invite Him into your family decisions, workplace stress, or difficult conversations during the week?

10. Navigating the Waiting Process

  • Scripture: Isaiah 40:31; Hebrews 6:12

  • Question: Pastor David stated that "every promise has a process" and "waiting in God's presence is never wasted." How can we maintain trust and joy while waiting for God to fulfill a long-standing promise?

11. Overcoming Daily Distractions

  • Scripture: Mark 1:35; Psalm 46:10

  • Question: In an era of constant phone notifications, busy schedules, and media noise, what practical boundaries can you set this week to create a personal "tent of meeting" for quiet fellowship with God?

12. Corporate Vision for 2027

  • Scripture: Hebrews 10:22–25; Acts 2:42–47

  • Question: As High Point AG Church adopts "His Presence" as our theme for 2027, how can our small group intentionally cultivate God's presence when we gather together each week?
